The short version

For most vehicle manufacturers, battery end-of-life starts long before the first car reaches ten years old. Line rejects appear during ramp-up, warranty replacements arrive from the dealer network in the first years of sales, and recall campaigns can create sudden volume that has to be handled safely and documented carefully. A take-back programme that only plans for end-of-life packs misses most of the early flow and usually ends up improvising when it matters most.

We design the programme around every stream at once. Each one gets its own intake route, pricing logic and reporting line, but all of them sit under a single agreement and feed one data set. That gives sustainability, aftersales and procurement teams the same view of volumes, outcomes and certificates, and it means the producer obligation is evidenced as packs move rather than reconstructed at year end.

Designing a take-back programme around real return streams

Warranty returns, recall stock, prototype packs and true end-of-life units behave differently. Warranty returns often hold high capacity and may be repairable at module level, while recall stock can be large, sudden and partly damaged. Prototype and validation packs carry confidential designs and need controlled destruction records. End-of-life packs arrive steadily from dealers and fleets with a wide spread of condition.

We map each stream to a route before the first collection: which sites receive it, what paperwork travels with it, who signs off grading and how value is shared. Mapping this early prevents the most common programme failure, where every return is treated as scrap and high-value modules are shredded because nobody set up a faster path for them.

Evidence that satisfies regulators and auditors

Producer responsibility is only discharged when the evidence holds up. In India that means certificates generated on the CPCB EPR portal against verified recycled weight. In the EU it means documentation that supports producer responsibility, recycling efficiency and, from February 2027, battery passport records for in-scope batteries. In the United States it means traceability that supports state programmes and customer sourcing requirements.

We tie every certificate to serial numbers, weighbridge records and processing outcomes, so an auditor can follow a pack from the dealer bay to the refined salt batch. Monthly data feeds carry the same records into your ESG reporting, which avoids two versions of the truth.

Agree the evidence format with your compliance team before the first collection. Retrofitting serial-level data onto old consignments is slow and often incomplete.

Technical FAQ

How do OEMs transfer EPR liability for end-of-life EV batteries in India?

Under BWMR 2022 the producer retains the obligation but can discharge it by handing packs to a CPCB-registered recycler. We issue serial-linked EPR certificates per consignment, which are filed against the producer's registration on the CPCB EPR portal and offset that year's recycling target.

Can recovered metals be returned to our own cell supplier?

Yes. Battery-grade lithium carbonate, nickel sulphate and cobalt sulphate produced from your feedstock can be delivered to a nominated cathode precursor supplier under a mass-balance or segregated-batch arrangement.

Can one agreement cover plants and dealers in several countries?

Yes. A master agreement can cover sites in different markets, with country schedules for local registration, transport rules and certificate formats.

How are prototype packs kept confidential?

They move under sealed chain of custody, are dismantled in restricted areas, and are covered by destruction certificates and non-disclosure terms agreed with your engineering team.

What happens during a recall surge?

We activate pre-agreed surge capacity, open quarantine space for suspect units and scale collection runs, so recall volume does not displace your routine returns.
