The battery end-of-life picture in Germany
Germany is Europe's largest vehicle producer, and its EV industry spans Baden-Wurttemberg, Bavaria, Lower Saxony, Saxony and Brandenburg. Premium passenger EVs, plug-in hybrids and a growing cell and module production base all feed the end-of-life stream.
The EU Battery Regulation now sets demanding collection, recovery and recycled-content targets, and the digital battery passport arrives for EV batteries in February 2027. German OEMs are therefore looking for partners who can document each pack from intake to recovered material.
Our Stuttgart grading works and Zwickau second-life works serve southern and eastern Germany, and they are linked to refining capacity elsewhere in Europe for material that cannot be reused.
What drives volume in Germany
OEM clusters
Stuttgart, Munich, Ingolstadt, Wolfsburg and Zwickau host major vehicle programmes that produce both scrap and warranty returns.
Cell production
New cell plants in Lower Saxony, Brandenburg and Rhineland-Palatinate are adding production scrap as they ramp up.
Regional coverage
Grading in Stuttgart and second-life works in Zwickau keep transport distances short for most German programmes.
Second-life market
Commercial and industrial storage, charging hubs and grid services create demand for graded modules.
What the rules require in Germany
EU Battery Regulation
Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 applies directly, with producer responsibility, material recovery targets and recycled-content rules. EV batteries placed on the market from February 2027 need a digital battery passport.
National registration
Producers must register with stiftung ear before placing batteries on the German market. Take-back and treatment evidence must be kept for reporting.
Waste shipments
Moving battery waste across borders requires compliance with the EU Waste Shipment Regulation. Black mass is increasingly treated as hazardous waste for shipment purposes.

Germany: common questions
Can you support battery passport data?
We record grading results, routing decisions and recovery outcomes per serial number, which OEMs can feed into passport and due-diligence records.
Where is German material refined?
Material that cannot be reused is prepared as black mass and sent to refining capacity in our European network under waste shipment rules.
Do you collect from dealer workshops?
Yes, with consolidated routes for workshops and dealer groups, plus dedicated pickups for larger programmes.
Collecting in Germany?
Tell us where the packs are and we route them to the nearest site with the right paperwork for the jurisdiction.
