Pricing mechanisms
Recovered metals and intermediates are usually priced against a published reference, such as an exchange price or an assessed price from a recognised price reporting agency. The contract then sets a payable percentage or discount to reflect the product form, purity and processing still required by the buyer.
Some agreements add floors and ceilings to limit exposure to price swings, or use averaging periods to smooth volatility. Fixed prices are less common because battery metal prices have moved sharply in recent years, making long-term fixed terms risky for one side or the other.
Terms that decide the real price
The headline payable figure is only part of the picture. Sampling procedures, assay methods, moisture determination and penalties for impurities can move the final settlement considerably. Contracts should name the laboratory, the method and the process for resolving disagreements, usually an independent umpire whose result is binding.
Delivery terms, title transfer, payment timing and responsibility for transport and insurance also need to be clear. For hazardous intermediates such as black mass, the contract should set out who is responsible for classification, permits and any transboundary shipment approvals.

Volume and flexibility
Recyclers cannot always predict feed volumes, because collection depends on vehicle retirements, recalls and customer programmes. Offtake agreements therefore often set a volume range with tolerance bands rather than a fixed quantity, and they may allow either party to adjust nominations with notice.
Buyers value reliability, so a recycler that consistently delivers within its nominated range will usually secure better terms over time. Linking offtake contracts to the recycler's own collection agreements can help align expected feed with committed output.
