The shape of the volume
Electric two- and three-wheelers have led EV adoption in India, so they also generate most early end-of-life battery volume. Packs are typically a few kilowatt-hours each, far smaller than passenger car packs, but there are many of them spread across dealers, service centres, fleet operators and individual owners.
Three-wheelers used for passenger and cargo services often cycle heavily and retire earlier than private vehicles. Swappable battery networks add another pattern: packs remain owned by the network operator, cycle intensively and are retired centrally, which makes them easier to collect in volume.
Collection economics
Because each pack is small, collecting them one by one is expensive. Aggregation is the answer: dealers and service centres act as collection points, swap networks retire packs from central depots, and scheduled pickups consolidate many packs into each load. Safe storage at those points, with packs at low state of charge, is essential.
Chemistry mix complicates the picture. Two-wheelers use both NMC and LFP cells, and some older or lower-cost vehicles use other chemistries, including legacy lead-acid batteries in some three-wheelers. Sorting by chemistry at the collection point protects value and keeps lithium-ion and lead-acid streams apart.

Compliance and the informal sector
Under the Battery Waste Management Rules 2022, producers of these vehicles and batteries carry EPR obligations, and waste batteries should be handed to registered recyclers or refurbishers. In practice, some batteries still reach informal dismantlers, where unsafe handling creates fire and pollution risks and loses recoverable value.
OEMs can reduce leakage by building take-back into dealer agreements, offering incentives for returning old packs and tracking serial numbers from sale to retirement. Those measures also help them meet EPR targets with certificates linked to their own products.
