Road

Most retired EV batteries move by road from where they are removed to a collection yard or processing site. In Europe, road transport of dangerous goods follows ADR, and similar national rules apply elsewhere, based on the UN Model Regulations. Requirements cover packaging, labelling, documentation, vehicle equipment and driver training.

Road is flexible and suits the dispersed nature of collection, but costs depend heavily on consolidation. Shipping one pack at a time is expensive, while planned routes that collect from several sites reduce the cost per pack considerably.

Sea

Sea freight follows the IMDG Code and is commonly used for exporting black mass, refined salts and sometimes batteries between regions. Container shipping is cost-effective for large, consolidated loads, but lead times are long and ports may apply their own restrictions on lithium battery cargo.

Shipping waste batteries or black mass across borders also triggers transboundary waste rules, such as those based on the Basel Convention, which can require prior notification and consent from the countries involved.

Air

Air transport of lithium batteries is governed by the ICAO Technical Instructions and IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, which are the most restrictive of the modes. Damaged or defective lithium batteries are generally forbidden from air transport, and large batteries face tight limits.

In practice, air is rarely used for end-of-life EV batteries. It may occasionally be used for small samples or test cells shipped under strict conditions, but it is not a route for routine recycling logistics.
