Ageing and fade

NCA can deliver long life when it is kept in a moderate state-of-charge window, but it is sensitive to high voltage and heat. Swelling from gas generation is a common retirement signal in pouch formats.

The knee point

The knee can arrive abruptly in cells that have swelled or seen high temperatures, so any pouch stack with visible deformation is excluded from second life regardless of measured capacity.

Thermal behaviour

NCA shares the oxygen-release behaviour of high-nickel cathodes and is generally considered among the more reactive EV chemistries. Pouch cells have no rigid can, so mechanical damage and swelling translate quickly into safety risk.

Disassembly

Pouch stacks are laminated and often adhesive-bonded into modules. Harvesting is possible but slow, and the risk of puncturing a pouch means most stacks are discharged and shredded.
